Against Odds

Every time that Sarah S. and I decide to go for a run, something always intervenes. The first time, it rained. The second, I was so dehydrated that it was a pathetic trip back.

Yesterday, we decided that we were going to try again. After it had rained all day long, it finally looked as though it was over, only slightly misty. Just as a precaution, we wrapped our ipods in plastic bags and off we went.

It was mildly annoying when we would run through a puddle or get pelted in the head by lingering drops of water from overhead, but hey, we were out there.

The further we went, however, the darker the sky looked and that "mist" slowly began to get heavier. Soon, we looked at each other and knew that it was raining, but we needed to keep going. So what if we got a little wet? Its not like we are going to melt.

Soon we were a little less than half a mile from the EPA and the bottom fell out. It was like we ran into a wall or something. Like we were tied to leashes, we both halted and bolted back in the opposite direction. It was raining so hard that I could not see. I needed wipers for my eyes. Finally, I had no other choice but to look down and make sure that I didn't run into anyone or anything.

Cars were honking at us as we raced by and sought refuge under some cypress trees. That only lasted for a moment before the rain muscled through and we decided to make a run for the bus stop. Only a few yards away and I happened to run into a giant water puddle. Since I was in fact wearing running shoes (we both were) and the top part is mainly mesh for proper air flow, my feet were completely water logged. Each step that I took was like running with ten pound weights on my feet. As we were passing the fire station, we looked over and saw that there were two other girls on the other side of the street running too. We felt sorry for them. Although we were all morons for being out there, they were wearing sweat shirts, absolutely drenched sweat shirts.

When we successfully made it back to the house, our sobbing wet clothes were bound for the dryer. When I removed my socks they "smacked" onto the ground. I never felt so gross in all my life. I didn't know what was sweat, snot, or rain running down my face.

After putting on some dry clothes and not really feeling like working out anymore, we headed over from some take out sushi and watched a good chick flick. After Sarah got home, she texted me to let me know that she had arrived safely and then said that our running together was not meant to be. I told her that we just needed to keep at it. Hopefully soon, and without accident, inclement weather or disease, we will be able to run together.

Recover? From what?

Last night I was doing great at the gym. I ran for a really long stinking time and was thinking that I would do more. Then that little guy popped up on my shoulder and advised me that I was still planning on working out my legs, abs, and attending spin class in addition to the run on Saturday for which I paid. So, I took his advice and decided to hit that bright red "stop" button and went along my merry way.

Well, after I had finished all my planed exercises, I went to fetch my spin shoes and walked back towards the cycle room. When I rounded the corner, I immediately wanted to bolt in the opposite direction, but it was too late. She had already seen me.

The sub is a really nice girl, really, but her class is terrible. There was no energy at all, she says things as if they are polite suggestions. There is nothing polite about this class. This is a kick you in the butt (metaphorically speaking), work harder than you have ever worked before in your life and sweat a river.

She kept on using terms too. I don't do terms, just yell at me to turn it up two, three or four times. Tell me I am not working hard enough. If you piss me off enough, I am bound to either (1) work and push harder out of anger or (2) chunk a bike at your head. Now, since its spin class, which tires you out, the chances of two happening are slim to none, so yell dang it.

Furthermore, you have got to mix it up lady. There are no mountains, sprints or fast intervals. All she does are rolling hills and surges. That's freaking it. The music is just plain awful. I don't feel the surge coming when the music starts to pick up. Its more like a leisure ride in the park.

The girl next to me starting sharing my same thoughts. She informed me that she purposefully intends to skip Thursday's class and would see me Sunday.

I've decided that since I am running in the SPACE Race this Saturday that I would hold off on spin as well. I hardly broke a sweat while in there and really felt like it was a waste of time. If I hadn't needed to go home, I probably would have stayed longer at the gym and had another go on the treadmill.

Differences of Opinion

While Adam was here, I showed him the loft that I will be moving to soon. He said that they were interesting, but not his thing. "Well, it doesn't matter if its not your thing, is completely my thing." "You're right about that. I just need walls, I can't do that whole open space thing."

Geez. I also took Frannie over there when she came in on Sunday. She loved it and made it a point to tell me not to try and swim nor venture in the river. As accident prone as I am, and no matter how good a swimmer I am, that river will be the death of me, apparently.

I think that I will be just fine, but I know that the second anything happens to me while out there, she will be the first to say, "Told you so."

She did volunteer herself or Panya though for the move. I can't have both because one has to stay home with the kids, but I thought that was a lovely gesture. I will probably take Panya's assistance because I don't want to break Frannie's little body with my heavy crap. Perhaps she can come up afterwards and help me decorate.

As far as other volunteers, I have Jacki with her truck and possibly her husband, Britt (that is if she is done preparing for her party) and possibly Sarah N., Sarah S. and Ben L.

Who else would like to partake? There may be some pizza and beer in it for you (beer for afterwards of course.)

Ad-mazing Time

Inside joke. While Adam was visiting me this past weekend, he told me that he was going to change his name to Ad, since I go by Mere. You can't change it yourself buddy, someone else has to call you that first. Like I posted a while back, people have been calling Mere for nearly a decade if not more. Sorry bro, aint gonna happen.

This weekend though we had a great time. He came into town Friday. Finally finding his way to my house after his gps got him lost, he hopped in my car and went for a stroll downtown. We walked all over, originally just because we were waiting until we were actually hungry for dinner and because we thought that Sarah and Ben would be able to join us.

I took his picture at the Arch, which I was surprised that he had never done that before. He refused to let me take his picture on one of the bulldogs though. Not a true torists here.

After learning that Sarah and Ben would be unable to make it for dinner and would join us later for some drinks, we headed over to Flight. He finally made me try humus again. I tried it once many moons ago and disliked the grainy texture to it, although this patch was tolerable. Notice I didn't say pleasing here.

It was a great dinner though, particularly since neither of us were starving, so the tapas hit that spot. Afterwards, we headed over to Globe. I told him during our walk that it was supposedly on the top ten list of best bars in the US and he was shocked when I told him that I had never been there. Although it was interesting and I did enjoy the atmosphere, I must say that I was disappointed when I saw that my Blue Moon came without an orange wedge. Doesn't everyone know that you must serve Blue Moon with an orange?

Then I took him to my favorite place, the Winery. After that we hit up the Capital Room, which is suppose to be the new happening place in town. There Sarah and Ben finally met up with us. 'Bout time folks. There we ran into a familar face, Rich, my spin instructor. Turns out he and Ben know some of the same peeps. Small world.

Then it was time to take Adam to, and I refuse to call it by its new name, Firehouse. Sorry, but I think the whole situation around the name change was stupid. There he met my friend and bar sensational, Hugh. Its funny, Hugh has also started going to spin class. I saw him there once and wasn't sure that it was him at first. When all you have ever seen of him for the two years that I've known him is his waiste up, yeah, it catches you off guard.

Finally, we ended the night at my most, absolute fav spot in this town, 8e's. He loved it. It was great being there and being one of the few people who were actually alive during the 80's. We were throwing down our best moves. It was so much fun. We kept cracking up Sarah. Then Adam tried to swing. I am a pretty fair dancer and before the accident in college was taking numerous modern dance classes, but before all that, I taught my younger brother (primarily because Adam was stationed far away in the military) how to swing and salsa. Well, Adam was doing a fair job that night, but he has two left feet.

The next morning he requested Awful Waffle. Apparently the small town in the Lone Star State that he is currently stationed does not have one. So, off we went. As we were walking up the establishment, guess who was walking out? Rich, small world indeed. After some much needed grease and artery clogging food, it was time to head back for some household chores. I grabbed my lawnmower and headed out to the yard. You may be asking why Adam wasn't doing it, being the big brother and all. Well, because he was inside disecting and attempting to repair my scooba. It died after the second time that I used it and I was so angry at wasting all that money. I called the support line and they said that all they could do was send me a new one for 179. No thank you!

Three hours and a trip to the store for duct tape, electrical tape and rubbing alcohol, she was fixed! Now permanently with a "black eye" (electrical tape), but she works as good as new. I was amazed that it was able to do it when the support rep was so unwilling to do anything. Ugh! I was a little worried though. When he told me that he was finished, he came to me with a bowl of like 15 left over screws. Hmmmm.

Sadly, he had to head back on the road as his leave was ending soon and its a long drive back to Texas. I will miss him, especially since I only see him usually for the holidays (if that). We are pretty close to one another, particularly since we were the middle kids and usually caused the most trouble. Not saying that I don't love my other siblings just as much, but the middle kids have to stick together.

It was kind of cool though. He called me last night during his long drive back and said that by some weird freak of nature, he was driving along the Mississippi and was listening to a local radio station from my town. How does that happen?

Autumn Nights

Its amazing how much time can change things, or what it doesn't.

Tonight I was walking out of the library and it felt as though I had gone back in time. I immediately began remembering those late nights in the cold uninviting building with Jenice, Cyndi and little Lacy working on legal research. We would stay until the security guard decided that he was done updating his facebook and wanted to go home. Officially it doesn't close until 10, but he would kick us out when he was ready to quit. Great business practices right there.

I remembered what my thoughts were while I was packing up my books. I would be anxious about the time we had left to finish the projects at hand and the constant worry of whether or not we would get them done in time. I would then focus my attention on getting home, but only for a short while. After pulling into the driveway, I would be leaving again, to Ramsey for that night's workout routine.

Those were probably the hardest three months that year. Notice, I said that year. This year, although much has changed, will definitely be harder. I have the same professor, who, however easier she has said that she has made the class, its highly unlikely that it will be. In conjunction with that are two more classes. So, similar to last year, there will be many nights burning the midnight oil and closing down the gym.

I am excited about the fall's soon approach though. Each morning when I wake up and feel the cool air on my face I smile in absolutely glee. This is by far my favorite time of year. When the temperature is just right.

When I leave home everyday for work, I turn my ac unit off to save money. Well, last night it felt so amazing that I never turned it on. When I woke this morning, the temperature was 73 degrees in the house. That is awesome.

This season just has so many wonderful things that I am looking forward to. For instance, and although their run is pretty horrible this year, but I am very excited about my next tailgating adventure. Its a great time with great friends. I am literally counting down the days and screaming in horror at the state of my garage for prep of my move. Every night when I go to sleep, my head is full of ideas of where to place everything in the new place. I have decided, and in spite of my track record, that I am going to purchase lots of plants. Perhaps even my own majestic palm.

Besides packing, my main task at hand is trying to convince a certain someone, (ahemm, Panya) to cycle with me in November. Shortly thereafter he will be welcoming his 40th birthday. What a great way to ring in this new chapter in your life Panya. You should totally do it, especially for me, your favorite (and youngest) sister-in-law. Pu, pu, pu, please..........

Summer Nights

Every morning when I leave for work, I am greeted with the cooler air of fall. Since Labor Day Weekend has now past, its time to reflect back on what a terrific summer I have had. Truly the best of my life, and I have my family and friends to thank for that. Even my most angry of nephews.

I want to thank you all for being there for me and for not allowing me to slow down, not once. For keeping me going and pushing me that extra mile. The love and support you've all shown is overwhelming at times and occasionally strange salty particles appear, I have no idea what they are, but I don't care for them.

Anyway, as a little "Thank you" and to commemorate the great adventures from the past few months, I wanted to make a compilation of my favorite snap shots.

Today is SO my day!!!

I'm moving!

This is so exciting. I can't remember the last time that I was this excited about something that was happening in my life. Okay, that's not true. I haven't been this excited since my trip to NY.

I've been excited for other people, but for me in a long time. Like, when my ex got accepted to a law school that he really wanted to go to, when my nephews were born, when Mel got married, when Lin got engaged, and when Andrea had her son. So many wonderful things have been happening to my friends, and now, its my turn.

I cannot wait, 30 days from now I will be in complete bliss. Would you like to see my bliss, would you?

I cannot wait to wake up in the morning in my overly huge and amazing bedroom and place my delicate toes down on the hard wood floors. I cannot wait to finally learn how to cook with a gas stove. I just can't wait. I will be able to study next to the river or actually in the river ontop of the large stones.

Its so peaceful and claming out there. I just can't wait, I simply cannot say it enough.

The best part, no carpet. Roomba will be all that I need, and my mop, but that's it. No more steam cleaning my carpets (that means my mom can for an extensive amout of time borrow my carpet cleaner). I will just let roomba loose in the morning in my bedroom, let him run in the living room at night and call it a day. Easy peesy, lemon squeezy. (Yeah, I said it, so what?)

Biggest plus. Not that I minded living with Sarah, not that I minded the good times with my ex, but this place will be 100% completely mine. I haven't lived alone since I was 20. Granted I have been living alone for a while now, but it was still not completely mine because I once shared it with another. Not this time. To repeat a common phrase once used by me 23 years ago, ahemmm, "MINE!"

The pros just go on and on. No more grass to cut. No more weeds to pull. No more nasty people standing in my driveway. No more house showings. No more worries of a possible break in. (Its been happening in my current neighborhood).

So, I raise my glass to today's fortunes that have been bestowed upon my life. I hope that if there is anything that you all are hoping and dreaming for, comes true. I am passing along my luck, karma, or whatever magic has happened here today.
